memo

After learning practical drawing, he went to work for the Ministry of Interior, and started to work in the painting of pottery. It is said that he went to a painting factory from the Kano family. He also said that he once learned Japanese painting about Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, but he himself did not learn painting from Yoshitoshi, but just played under Yoshitoshi. He says he hasn’t studied Kano school painting in earnest. In fact, the influence of both Kano school and Ukiyo-e is not noticeably recognized in Keishu’s paintings, and the part of self-education is large.

Around 1887, he participated in the literary association “Ken’yusha” by Koyo Ozaki, Bimyō Yamada, and Sazanami Iwaya, and drew illustrations, especially in combination with Koyo Ozaki. In 1891, he devoted himself to the illustrations of children’s literature, starting with the illustrations of Sazanami Iwaya’s fairy tale “Kogane Maru”, “Yamato Shimbun” and the magazine “Shonen Sekai” published by Hakubunkan, also published by Hakubunkan He draws many illustrations for books such as the small wave edition of the series “Japanese Old Story”. The illustration published in the magazine “Shonen Sekai” was one of the earliest “illustrations for children” after the Meiji Restoration.

He retired from frontispiece in 1914, and made a new innovation in Satsuma ware pottery painting, and in his later years he drew handwriting.
