Original woodblock print – Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904) – ”Shichifukujin ito wata baibai no zu”七福神糸綿売買之図(Seven Lucky Gods buying and selling thread cotton)- Japan – 1867(Keiou 3 period) september

Seven Gods of Good Fortune are depicted in this composition.

恵比寿(Ebisu)、大黒(daikoku)、弁財天(benzaiten)、布袋(hotei)、寿老人(jurōjin )、福寿楼(Fukuju-rou)、毘沙門天( bishamonten)

Utagawa Yoshiiku’s signature is Ichieisai Yoshiiku ga” 一恵斎芳幾画” in his signature.

Because this woodblock print is old
The paper is burnt and there are traces of Glue.
The backing paper is pasted and there are repair marks.

(memo)Utagawa Yoshiiku
Born the son of teahouse proprietor Asakusa Tamichi in 1833, Yoshiiku became a student of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi toward the end of the 1840s. His earliest known work dates to 1852 when he provided the backgrounds to some actor prints by his master.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi is a brother apprentice. At that time he was as popular as Yoshitoshi, and was involved in publishing newspapers as a painter.
