A disciple of Kikuchi Yosai(菊池溶斉). His real surname is Yoshikawa, his first name is Yoshimata, his common name is Yoshiaki, his childhood name is Sadakichi, and later Masakichi. Known as Ryosuke. Shotei is a sign.
In 1875, a talent was discovered by Gisuke Matsuo(松尾義介), an exporter of arts and crafts, and he got a job at the standing industry and trading company, the first trading company in Japan that handled pottery for export. He draws cloisonne craft designs by Sosuke Namikawa and learns Western painting techniques through this work.
The exact length of stay in Paris is unknown, from just over two to three years, but at this time Shotei participated in circles around the Impressionists. According to Edmond de Goncourt’s Diary, from the end of October to the end of November 1878, the Shotei gave Edgar Degas a picture of a bird.
The main part of Shotei was a Japanese-style painter who mainly used handwriting, but on the other hand, he showed his talent in woodblock prints, frontispieces, and illustrations, and was well received.
