Description

Original Woodblock print – Tsukioka Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) – ‘Kaganochiyo’加賀千代( Lady Chiyo and The Broken Water Bucket) – From the series “Tsuki hyakushi” 月百姿 (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon) – Japan -1889 (Meiji 22)

The signature is ‘yoshitoshi ‘芳年

This ukiyo-e has cardboard attached to it to increase its strength.

Though the print is titled for the Edo-period Kaoyo, the beauty is depicted with the floor-length hair and robes of a 14th-century noblewoman. In the time of Taiheiki, voyeurism would have centered on seeing her face, not her breasts. Women of imperial lineage would have been kept cloistered indoors, only meeting visitors behind a screen and certainly not in a garden. To that end, seeing her face would itself have been a tantalizing prospect for a man with Moronao’s proclivities

It is rare for Yoshitoshi to draw trains, etc., and there are not many works.

memo
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡 芳年; also named Taiso Yoshitoshi 大蘇 芳年 1839 – 1892) was a Japanese artist.
He is widely recognized as the last great master of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock printing and painting.
He is also regarded as one of the form’s greatest innovators.

In addition, Bob studied not only Ukiyo-e but also Kikuchi Yosai’s style of painting and Western painting. He also studied historical paintings, bijin-ga, genre paintings, and classical paintings.
Many of Bob’s works are famous, including his muzan-e(無惨画).

Famous disciples include Toshikata Mizuno(水野年方), Toshihide Migita(右田年英), and Toshitsune Inano(稲野年恒).
There are Toshinobu Yamazaki(山崎年信) and others.
As it is an old ukiyo-e, it has stains and cut.
