Original woodblock print triptych – Paper – Samurai – Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) – Imagawa yoshimoto Okehazama ōgassen no zu 木下藤吉郎 市松の怪力に驚く図 (Kinoshita Tokichiro Surprised by Ichimatsu strength)- Japan – 1894 (Meiji 27)

The signature is Ouju Toshihide-e 応需年英画
This ukiyo-e has stains here and there.

This picture depicts an episode from “Taikoki” (a biography of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Taiko).
Tokichiro Kinoshita, who was an ashigaru (foot soldier) at the time, was surprised at the strength of the two-year-old Ichimatsu when he saw him playing by dragging a millstone. This ukiyo-e depicts that scene.
Taking this opportunity, Toyotomi Hideyoshi set his sights on Masanori Fukushima and made him his retainer.
Masanori Fukushima, the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s aunt Shounin, served Hideyoshi Toyotomi from an early age.
At the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583 (Tensho 11), he became the head of the “Shizugatake no Shichihonyari” (the seven spears of Shizugatake) and performed military deeds.

Throughout his life, he continued his efforts to pass down traditional woodblock printing techniques to posterity, and died in 1925 at the age of 63.
