Original woodblock print – Toshu Shogetsu (act. ca. 1870-1900) – ‘Shōgunke gogenkan no zu’ 将軍家御玄関図 (The Former Shogun Tokugawa Enters the Gate) – From the series “Kanko Azuma nishiki” 歓古東錦 (A Look at the Old Days in Color Prints) – Japan – 1889 (Meiji 22)

The signature says “Toshu Shogetsu”東州勝月”.

Good condition, fine colors, trimmed margins, backed

The name is Katsumi. They are called Toshu, (東州,洲) and Katsutsuki(勝見). I lived in Asakusa Eizumicho. He started his activities around 1888, promulgating the Constitution and drawing pictures related to the exposition. He draws genre paintings and Sino-Japanese War paintings, such as the “Onko Tonishiki” series, which is a series of three large-format pieces from 1889. The drawing period was in the 20s and 30s of the Meiji era.

Ukiyoe shows Iemochi Tokugawa, the 14th shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, heading for Kyoto.
