menuki with gold inlay with person pulling cattle and knitting – Japan – 18th/19th century (Edo period)

Left Size = 30mm × 18mm.
weight = 4.8g

Right Size = 29mm × 16mm.
weight = 4.1g

Menuki “目貫” are the ornaments that are found under the handle wrap on katana and wakizashi.
They define the character of the sword and can tie the owner to the sword.
The Menuki can be replaced when the tsuka (handle) is re-wrapped.
They are sold in sets of two and placed on either side of the tsuka.
