Description
Hanging scroll painting – Paper – Nishikawa school artist – Yujo zu(遊女図)-“Teiichi 亭市-Japan – (1650-1700)
This work is a hand-painted, possibly Nishikawa school artist drawn around the first Edo period(1650-1700).
The signature says “Teiichi 亭市?”.
The way the Yujo was drawn and the look was not the one drawn by the Utagawa school painter in the late Edo period, but the work of a painter named Nishikawa Sukenobu who was active in the early Edo period. After that, women’s paintings with a style like Sukenobu became popular.
In the early Edo period, woodblock ukiyo-e was not very popular, and hand-painted ukiyo-e was the mainstream.
Good condition considering the age, trimmed margins, dirt on upper right part of right sheet.
